Revision Techniques That Actually Work

Revision Techniques That Actually Work

Highlighting and re-reading feel productive, but research shows they are among the least effective revision strategies. Here is what the evidence says works better.

Active recall

Test yourself instead of re-reading. Close your notes and try to write down everything you remember. Use flashcards, practice questions or teach the topic to a friend. Retrieval is what strengthens memory.

Spaced repetition

Spread your revision out over time. Review material after one day, then three days, then a week. Each time it gets slightly harder to recall — and that is exactly what makes it stick.
